Attention New Canaan Families..... we are actively seeking host families for our incoming 2018/2019 International Exchange student.....

Our club has enjoyed an incredible tradition of hosting a High School aged International Exchange Student for many years.  Each Host Family has reported a memorable experience that has impacted the Host Family as much or more than the exchange student.  Could your family be interested?  To learn more, contact Alex Grantcharov, our Youth Exchange Officer, or any club member.

Rotary International Youth Exchange....

A signature program of the Rotary Club of New Canaan features the revival of our longstanding tradition of International Youth Exchange in our effort to promote World Peace and Understanding.

Our 2017/2018 International Youth Exchange Student, Constantin Sper from Germany, enjoyed a fantastic year here in New Canaan.  As he recounted to our club in his farewell presentation on June 22, 2018, highlights included his arrival in the United States, playing football for the New Canaan Rams, several visits to New York City, various cultural events, meeting other Rotary International Exchange Students through organized Rotary gatherings, picking up a lacrosse stick for the first time and playing for the NCHS Rams, and above all, spending quality time with his host families.  A special shout-out to thank our very own Lisa Lynn Kirkpatrick and her husband Gil and their family and our own John Engel and his wife Melissa and their family for providing warm, welcoming host homes for Constantin this year.  Our hosts give a great deal, but they will tell you that they receive that much and more in return.

Hosting an international exchange student is a wonderful way to expand your family's horizons and create a life-long relationship.  If you or anyone you know is interested in potentially hosting a student, please contact Alex Grantcharov at alex.e.grantcharov@gmail.com

During the 2016/2017 academic year, we hosted Alvaro Riquelme from Linares, Chile, who successfully completed his Junior Year at New Canaan High School.  Alvaro played soccer for the Rams and participated in many other activities.  During the school year, Alvaro stayed with three different local host families, beginning with our club's own Ben and Betsy Bilus.

Here a just a few photos from Alvaro's successful year.....

During the 2015/2016 Rotary Year, our club sponsored outgoing International Exchange Students and hosted Incoming International Exchange Students.  Here are just a few photos highlighting this wonderful experience.  Special thanks to club members Anne Cheney, Alex Grantcharov and Cynthia Gorey for their work leading this effort!

The quest for the Golden Putter begins.....

Robin Gestal and Alison Bedula, volunteers with the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps (also known as NCVAC), are joined by Rotary Club President-Elect Keith Simpson after making a very informative presentation to our members.

NCVAC provides a vital service to local residents and the volunteer commitment of its members is second to none.  We are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated individuals in our midst who spend countless hours ensuring us that quality medical attention is close at hand.  For a small town without a hospital, the speed and quality of response to medical needs is remarkable!
Today we enjoyed a visit from New Canaan Nature Center Executive Director Bill Flynn, to bring us up to date on “The State of the Center.”  After describing a brief history of the Center and bringing us up to date on the latest news, Bill opened his mysterious green box and produced Socrates [Sox], a mature great horned owl who tolerated the audience while he explained how Sox had arrived at the Nature Center, the various types of owls, their lack of smell, their OK eyesight, their incredible hearing and their prowess as hunters.  It was a fun and informative presentation!

The New Canaan Library will host a talk by Marshall Mayer entitled "From Devastation to Conservation: Rebuilding in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan" on Sunday, April 9th from 2:00-3:00pm in the Lamb Room.  Marshall was one of the founders of Young Pioneer Disaster Response (YPDR), an organization that the Rotary Club of New Canaan helped fund with a Rotary District Matching Grant in 2014.  Make plans to come learn how a few individuals can impact the world when they put their heart, soul and mind to work.  CLICK HERE to learn more and register to attend.

'Marine Domes' hand made by YPDR volunteers and local residents are ready to be deployed to help restore the coral reef off Bantan Island in the Philippines
Earlier this year the New Canaan Rotary Club received a Rotary District Matching Grant for an International Service Project to help restore Marine life off the Coast of Bantayan Island in the Philippines through the work of the Young Pioneer Disaster Relief organization.  Check out this video showing the effects of the first underwater 'Marine Domes' set in place to accelerate the growth of new reefs and to provide a protected home for vulnerable marine wildlife.
